Two days ago we saw a long convoy of buses on I-35. The buses were empty. They were heading south, coastal bound. Now the evacuations have begun. Galveston and parts of Houston are emptying out, as Hurricane Ike roars towards Texas.
For a while it looked like Ike would come to Austin, that it would be downgraded to Category 1 by that time, but still a hurricane and dangerous. But now it appears it will stay east of us as it moves up through the state.
We’ll still feel the effects of it, though. High winds, six inches of rain, and possible power outages are what we’re being told to expect. Saturday should be interesting. We have a wedding to attend Saturday and have not heard yet if it’s still on. The big Longhorn game was called off. Other things have been called off, too, just in case.
We’re hoping for the best, but prepared for the worst. We have food, water, candles, a wind-up flashlight, a weather radio, batteries, and our fingers are crossed. Assuming we don’t have a power outage or get blown away, I’ll blog about what happens, or doesn’t happen. You never know what these damn hurricanes will do. Stay tuned.
